The Vintage Village

Where Vintage Never Gets Old...

Here is something I found, and would like to share with all of you.
Always the fight for google placements, being seen, etc. Every little
bit helps us all, right?

These are words to avoid putting with your ads. This list came from around January of 2010, so if anyone would
have anything more updated, please share this with us here:)

WARNING: Attempts to cheat the Google System using misspellings, asterisks, or other tricks are considered abuse.

PROMOTIONAL WORDS:
- free (including hyphenated words such as pet-free, smoke-free, hands-free, etc-free)
- sale
- vacation
- travel
- travels

ANYTHING ALCOHOL & TOBACCO RELATED WORDS:
- smoke, smoked
- champagne
- whiskey
- beer
- cigar
- cigarettes
- rum
- rummo
- vine (supposedly because vine = wine in another language)
- vineyard
- camel (as a cig brand, otherwise it's showing up)
- brandy
- gin
- bordeaux

ADULT & EXPLICIT / NAUGHTY WORDS:
- anime (however "manga" is allowed_
- strip
- stripper
- adult; including hyphenated words such as adult-size
- butt
- sexy
- affair
- ale
- chick
- sensual
- lingerie

MISCELLANEOUS WORDS:
- postage (or postage stamp)
- collecting (collectible and collect are okay)
- thorny
- precious metal
- muse

**Another issue that I was reminded of with another place is the 1st 3 letters of a word, if bad, will not be accepted too. For instance the word....Association...the 1st 3 letters would create a problem. I know, we all try sooo hard, and it is tough out there doing online sales.

Anything with Google is always a lot to take in, I know. But, we are all always
searching to make things better for our listings, help promoting
ourselves, etc. Hopefully this can help everyone with your listings.
Remember, if you happen to find anything more updated, or have more that
could be added to this, please share this with us, ok?

Good Luck everyone, and Happy Sales!:)

I know 1 word that has me astounded is the word...lingerie...what on earth! Sorry, I don't see anything dirty with it as it's a vintage item also. And...there is much lingerie that is being sold on the internet too!:) Whew! Google is mind boggling, aren't they?:)
OK, so how does one tag a vintage ashtray or cigar tin if one cannot use a word that is tobacco related?? Lingerie?? Sensual, a great word!...Preposterous!--do "they" somehow think that if one doesn't see a word in print that a person will not think on it, wear it, smoke it or drink it (quel horror--after all, I drink therefore I am)?? I know this applies to Google searches but still!;)....

Exactly! I don't like it either, and find it rather senseless with some of it. Unfortunately, google is such a big thing, like insurances, they control us, and how we do things. Only thing I can think of is searching to see how others are doing things, but already know that some are still using words, and showing too. I don't know if a dictionary OR even a thesaurus could help with some of this. A word that would relate to items, but is still acceptable. Like not to use collecting, but yet collect and collectible are ok.

There has to be a bending point to some of these words to use....I would think. What really got me was the lingerie....that is sold everywhere, and all kinds of it too. Yes, it can refer to how they have categorized it, but it also is referred to with other categories too.

Can be mind boggling sometimes, huh?

Indeed! Now, I don't mind that Google has rules but I wish it were explained somewhere the daft reasoning behind it!!:)

Thanks so much for the info!! Truly helpful and naturally I just used some of those tags, today and yesterday:)...off to edit!
As far as anything ashtray or smoking related...I always go with "tobacciana" which I know is google acceptable but that's about the only one that I can think of.
...soon we'll all be living in plastic bubbles to protect us from the evils of the world...
**Sigh**
Thank You:) Chuckling at comment of the plastic bubble....true tho:) Thanks for sharing that word of the tobacciana...that is helpful for those who deal with those items:)

I have been using :tobacciana"...but so much for using "all 14 tags", as Etsy constantly urges us to do;) Also, for drinking items you can use "breweriana". I do have to chuckle at "champagne" as a Google no-no, though!--a while back I sold a vintage sterling champagne swizzle stick pretty soon after listing it! I used "wine" and "champagne" and "bar" in the tags and liberally in the listing:)

I know! Some of them no-no's are colors! How disfunctional is that? Gotta love it right? At least laugh at it!:)

So, I can't travel or go on vacation, smoke, drink, look sexy, wear precious metals, like thorny roses, or have a muse?? What shall I do???? :-)

Do you know if this applies to just the title, or anywhere in the listing? Because good grief - what if you wanted to list a camel hair coat? Beer stein? cigarette box? smoke glass? Or (in my case) vintage travel brochures? "Vintage booklets for looking at when you want to go somewhere that isn't home."

Arrrrrgggghhhhh... like we all needed one more thing to have to sort out. Isn't putting together listings time-consuming enough without this?
