Hundreds of thousands of postal workers could lose their jobs as part of congressional proposals to overhaul the U.S. Postal Service. (Eric Risberg/ASSOCIATED PRESS) House lawmakers sparred Wednesday over competing proposals to buoy the beleaguered U.S. Postal Service, with Democrats voicing concerns that Congress runs the risk of improperly considering the fates of hundreds of thousands of postal workers as it debates the future of mail delivery.
Facing about $10 billion in year-to-year losses, the Postal Service has warned it will not be able to pay about $5.5 billion in retirement and health-care costs as required by law when its fiscal year ends next week.
In an hours-long afternoon session, a House subcommittee with jurisdiction over USPS advanced a GOP-backed measure that would allow the Postal Service to end Saturday mail deliveries, sell advertising space at post offices and on mail trucks, and phase out most residential to-the-door deliveries in four years, requiring customers with mailboxes at their front door to use curbside boxes or a neighborhood clusterbox. The bill also would require postal workers to pay more toward retirement and health-care benefits and establish a financial control board to overhaul postal finances.

Our delivery folks seem to be contract employees rather than driving official USPS vehicles they drive their own vehicles.

Permalink Reply by Another Time on September 28, 2011 at 9:26am Thanks for posting these links here. Understanding how the post office works is crucial for every American and especially crucial for small business people... like us! Without a solid Post Office I am out of business! How about you?
Most people do not understand that the USPS is NOT a government agency and does not receive any of your tax dollars. However, it is not free to operate like any other independent business because of it's regulations by Congress. And ... think about what is happening in Congress these days: chaos, argument, self interest, special interest, corporate backing, lack of cooperation.......the list is endless! No matter what side of the political spectrum you come from, you know we have a very inefficient Congress!
I know there are other delivery systems, but selling/shipping from home is viable, affordable and easy with the USPS. I intend to be vocal with my representatives on this issue and show endless support for the USPS! As your local office what you can do to help!
