Where Vintage Never Gets Old...

Hi, everyone. I thought I'd start at the beginning: why we collect what we collect. Do you focus on dolls from a particular era, a certain country or region, made from a specific material or, simply, those you loved as a child? And how did this begin for you...inheriting a beloved family heirloom, an unexpected gift from a friend, a fascination with costumes? In my case, I was an art history student (long, long ago) and my love of period portraits lead to an interest in antique bisque dolls. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Debra,

I love this subject, i could go on and on here, but my english isn't so good.

I've been collecting dolls (nothing in particular), but the ones i like the most i haven't found one yet,

they are called Izannah Walker.

Are you or anyone familiar with them ?

Hi. Yes, I'm familiar with Izannah Walker dolls although I'm sure there are others with much more knowledge than I have. They are mid-nineteenth American molded cloth dolls that are less 'fussy' than most dolls from this time period. I think their appeal is their simplicity. What do you particularly like about IW dolls?

Thanks for posting!

It's exacly the simplicity of them that i like, also the mixed media tecnique used for making their faces.

I've seing lately a pattern for making IW arms and hands, it seems to be complicated (to small) and time consuming.

My interesing on collecting ancient doll it's most for their heads, i like to remake their body and giving them new chothing with vintage fabrics and laces (which i amalso  interested on finding good deals). ;)

Hi Debra & everyone! Thank you for inviting me.  Saw the post about Izannah Walker dolls and had to respond. Finding one is my Holy Grail doll - I always call her "my last doll" because when I do find her, she will be the last doll I buy - I won't need another! I will be in complete and forever Dolly Bliss!

Hi, Marie. Thank you for joining the discussion. Love the idea of a "last doll."   :)

Thanks for the invitation to this forum!

I love dolls! My father used to travel when I was young, and he always brought back a doll from the country he visited. That collection also included some dolls and figurines from popular movies of the time such as Mary Poppins and Cinderella.

Most people that know me well, know how much I love Barbie! I have been collecting for years. Some I've kept in boxes, but most I've taken out to enjoy. I have Barbie furniture and all the little things that go with the sets, because my second love is minatures! The auction folks know to advertise Barbie, because I will be sure to buy!

The other thing I own is a dollhouse that my father made that is a replica of the house I grew up in. My mother decorated it to look like our house with pictures and rugs. I had some of the Ideal Petite Princess Collection furniture. I would play for hours with the little doll family.

I could go on and on about dolls! I just went to an estate sale on Friday and bought Cheerful Tearful, my first doll baby. I collect (and will sell!) dolls from the sixties and seventies.

I love and admire antique dolls, but don't know much about them, so I expect I will learn a lot!

Thanks again!

Welcome, C. Your wonderful post brings up a related observation--that dolls may be different from other 'decorative objects' in that they are representations of ourselves and our environments. (The doll house your father made is a lovely example.) Thoughts?

Hello and thanks for inviting me!

I was born during the Depression years <Yes, I am old!> and didn't get many dolls for Christmas or birthdays so I learned to appreciate the few dolls I received.  One year, I got the most beautiful bride doll and I still  have her today, even though one side of her face is damaged.  When my daughters were born, I started collecting Madam Alexander dolls for them.  Each of the two daughters have a complete set of the Little Women collection.  My oldest daughter fell in love with anything that was Gone With The Wind, and she has several Scarlett dolls.  The oldest daughter has a passion for dolls and recently I gave her  Tressie doll with  growing hair because she had one in the 1960's and frequently talked about it.

I will be watching the forum to see what other people have an interest in.

Have a wonderful day, everyone!

Yes, I do believe dolls are representations of ourselves and our environments.

Of course, I certainly never thought I looked remotely like the Barbies I grew up with! LOL!

I used to "play Barbies" with the neighbor girls, and we rigged up this treehouse deal where we built a platform in a tree for a Barbie house. We brought furniture up by tying a rope to a basket. Barbie had many adventures. Ken was always an afterthought. I think Barbie represented the adventurous side of me and still does.

My mother bought me a Crissy doll with hair that grew. She bought it for me because of the name. She made the most beautiful clothes, but I never liked the doll. It was too big and too awkward to play with. But I knew she loved me by giving me a gift of a doll with my name. I guess you can call that a representation of me!

I am so sorry you feel that way. I was just going to respond to your earlier comment to let you know that we are planning to discuss doll clothing and repair in the coming months and do hope you will contribute. Please let me know what prompted you to feel that you were not welcomed by the group so we can address your concerns. Thank you.

Hi, everyone. Thank you for all of your contributions on this first day of our group; they have been so interesting. I will sometimes "step back" to permit other replies before adding my own, but please be assured that I read and value all comments.

Hi, Gwen. What a 'rich' contribution to our discussion! Precious family gifts, interest in popular culture ("Gone with the Wind"), and childhood friends. Thank you!
