I have listed this in my Etsy shop along with a statement that I would love more information about it, but no one has yet contacted me. So, I will post him(her) here in our forums in the hopes that one of you knows something about these peacocks, pheasants....some kind of bird where the head can be removed to store something inside the cavity of the body. Thank you.
I believe it is a Decanter.
Thanks, Ken. I think it's a decanter also. For a secret drinker perhaps???LOL M'lady, sitting at her dressing table taking a little nip? I can't see it being for the husband somehow unless it's on the side table as decor. Then he would nip as well. Oh, my....I am prattling on.
All of the above suggestions are great. If you find more that it could be please add it on the list.
Sue, you may want to get it tested. It's possible it may be coin silver and not be marked. Here are a couple of sales on Ruby Lane for similar items:
(this one is marked 800)
(the seller doesn't mention any marks on these)
Even if your's is silver plated, it may be worth considerably more than you have it listed for.
Just a suggestion - remove the comments in your listing guessing about the underlying metal. Just FYI, not criticizing, it is "nickel" not "nichol" and the most common metals to be plated are copper, brass, white metal or nickel. With so many choices it's about impossible to tell for certain.
Guesses aren't the best idea to include in a listing, it's a turnoff for shoppers and can make it sound like you really don't know what you are selling.
The relevant part is exactly what you said, it responds wonderfully to silver polish, so it obviously it is silver and likely may be plated.
Nice piece, I haven't seen any exactly like it, so I don't know for sure other than agreeing it almost certainly must be a decanter. And not to criticize - but while the Ruby Lane listings are similar birds in appearance, quality-wise they are not in the same league; they are incredibly detailed, deeply molded, amazingly lifelike and obviously expensive to have produced, looking more like limited editions than mass produced.
Good luck !!
