Comment by Charmed Life on August 22, 2011 at 12:45am: There are also "tax stamps" or "Civil War Revenue Stamps" which were used to finance the Civil War.

I find them on the back of old photographs from the era.

Often, the stamp can be more valuable than the photograph.
