Where Vintage Never Gets Old...

I've been a very happy Ruby Lane seller for 2 1/2 years.  I have many wonderful pieces of antique jewelry (100 years old) that I would like to list below $100. Why is there a rule restricting this?

that's a good question which I've wondered about too...I've had some really nice antiques for under $100 which I had to list in collectibles..I figure if its over 100 years old, its an antique no matter what the price.....

I agree - I've had a couple of books that were over 100 years old but I can't list them as antiques because they're not worth that much money.

I get frustrated on the other end.  The $5 minimum on jewelry I really wish was $10.  I have scads in the 5-10$ range but don't want to fill my shop with low priced jewelry but cannot sell it at other locations because I would lose my exclusive.  So it sits in boxes - LOTS of boxes.  Not even considering eBay because it has become a snake pit.  Sigh..... I'm looking at the Antique and Vintage Jewelry Lane requirements and this is what it says:

Minimum sale price for any Antique & Vintage Jewelry item is $10 USD.

Additional requirements for Antique & Vintage Jewelry: Antiques subcategory:

  • Antique & Vintage Jewelry: sub category Antique items must be high quality pieces that are 100 years old or older.
  • Minimum sale price for any Antique & Vintage Jewelry: sub category Antique item is $50 USD.

You might be confusing it with the other Antique Lane which has a minimum price of $100.  Here's the link if you want some light reading (LOL!):  http://www.rubylane.com/info/termsofuse#guidelines

Books can't be listed in the Antiques lane anyway, guidelines state they must be listed in the Books lane. If you list a book in the Books lane with a sub-category of Antiques, the minimum price is $50, and if you want to sell an antique book for less than $50, you can just list it in the Books lane and describe it as 'antique'... the minimum price would be $10 in that case.

Yes, I've found that as long as you put "Antique" in the title, your item will come up even if they are trying to just search in the Antiques lane.

Your item will also come up with 'antique' in the description; I think the only un-searchable section is the one for announcements that is marked as un-searchable content. However, I think priority is given to items with 'antique' in the title and/or category string. And this would apply to any word or term, not just 'antique.'

@ Suzy - THANK YOU!  I don't know where I got that $ 5.00, been using it forever and a day. This is a case in which I am delighted to be proven wrong!!!!!

Have a wonderful day - Betsy

Bijoux,

It was $5 many moons ago but there were just way too many pieces and not good quality so we raised it to $10.

As some stated if you use the word antique in your title and description (for those items that are 100 years plus) then your item is going to come up in a search for 'antique'. And, yes, the title is key followed by the description. This holds true for search indexing as well. If you have relevant keywords in your title and description you will stand a better chance of the item getting found on RL and search engines.

And, most important, be sure to read and know the guidelines for listing in any Lane. It is always good to review them on a regular basis because none of us can remember all the guidelines. Also visiting the RL forums will keep you informed of changes or discussions on listing requirements.

Thanks so much Carol!  I am a 'by the rules' type of gal but this is a reminder to review rules more than once in a blue moon. Ü

My 5-10 dollar pieces can go to other venue and I don't have to down grade my store with them.

Why does a nice piece of jewelry that is 100 years old - that is worth $10 degrade your store?  Having a mixture of prices in my shop has made me a very successful seller.  Beautiful postcards from the Victorian or art nouveau era sell for under $10 - I think these add to my shop.
