This morning I awoke and found two emails, sent from Ruby Lane. Sent at 2.27 and 2.27 AM, the emails informed me that both my shops had been put in preview. In other words, closed to the public. I am including the email about Ruby Lane below. If it weren't so frustrating, it would be funny. I particularly liked the part about how they wouldn't want me to miss a sale....
And I'm curious, if my email isn't working, which of course it is, how did they expect me to get the email? Which I did. Because my email is working. Because it's the same email I"ve had since I opened the Ruby Lane shop in July 2005.
Following the instructions and going to my home page, I simply clicked on reopen my shop, and got the message that my shop is once again open. I did nothing whatsoever with my email address. So, apparently another glitch, instead of possibly finding a purchase order this morning, I get a notice that I'm closed. As of this point, I am leaving the RP shop in preview, and sending the information on it to CS, so they can explain it to me. I feel like Ricky Ricardo though--"this is gonna take some pretty serious splaining Lucy...."
Your shop The Old Grey Mare, has been put in preview for this reason:
Closed because email address not working properly. Customers
are no longer able to view your shop and we'd hate to see you lose a
sale. To re-open your shop, follow the instructions on your shops home
page.

No, no! This has been in the works for awhile and the notice we are moving to Google Analytics was posted to the page before the update. My understanding is Tech is working on it now. I plan to join the Google Analytics discussion once all is 'right' on RL/RP.

Permalink Reply by Antik Avenue on November 9, 2011 at 11:13am Oh, OK.... I haven't looked into the Google Analytics but guess it's time so I can't speak much of it, but from the comments I've read it isn't near as friendly as RL's. I've always enjoyed being with RL and appreciate it for its fantastic features and dealer-friendly atmosphere (my husband used to tease me about it now he is a great supporter). I'm just wondering what other changes are coming about? I am far from being a techie but I'm just wondering why RL would decide to use Google analytics as opposed to their own. I understand it is free now. Could that change? All these changes make me wonder about what is around the corner. I haven't spoke much since all of the changes and upgrade and appreciate RL staff and their hard work. I look forward to everying getting back to "normal" including the "views" under the "manage items". Thank you, Carol, for listening to us and being here to answer our questions. Anita

Permalink Reply by CheriShops - Admin on November 9, 2011 at 11:29am my Google analytics for my RL shop are mega confusing as my top referrals and keywords are all from items I have on Ruby Plaza???
so it shows owners.rubyplaza.com not rubylane
or search.rubyplaza.com
???
If the shop visitors and item counts reports are going to go I will be quite sad as I do check those each day and don't see that displayed as clearly on analytics at all??
oops sorry to highjack your thread Dexter!
Permalink Reply by Antik Avenue on November 9, 2011 at 12:10pm Me, too, Dexter. Sorry.....I hope your email is fixed by now and you can see some light at the end of the tunnel--what a way to start the day!....I'm so impressed with everything I've read that you do. I really appreciate you sharing--maybe I'll even learn something :-) Miracles do happen....

Permalink Reply by San Marcos Art Glass on November 9, 2011 at 12:42pm The Old Grey Mare has been hit more than most. I thought you and I were neck and neck for a while, but you are at least 32 lengths in front of me now with trouble. I just hope I don't catch up.
I'm not having any sales, but I don't know how to interpret it. I had one customer ask me to hold something for her, which I was glad to do. Other than that, nothing. One thing that would make me feel better about this is to know why the move had to be done at this time. The explanation that the move had to be made at such a critical sales time so we could have continued excellent service and yada yada sounds like empty PR to me. The truth would be much better, because it would show more respect for merchants who used RL . I don't do well with rah-rah talk. It is fine for customers, but not for store owners. The reason that I want truthfulness is I need to know if I can expect repeats of this in the future. If contracts end in November, how can we be sure this won't happen again in another November down the road?
Permalink Reply by The Old Grey Mare on November 9, 2011 at 1:01pm Hey Cheri, I'm not familiar enough with all this to know about hijacking threads. Besides, I've got lots more to worry about, giggle....So no worries. I'll miss the reports too, but I started using Google Analytics a month ago, and I'll tell you that I learn more about it every day. And in some ways, I like them better than the RL reports, there is more depth to them, except I haven't figured out yet how to find out how many people have bookmarked my shop. I also started using AdWords about the same time, and they are tied together, so that helps me really understand things.
I did have to "re-open" my shop on RP, and not wait for CS to do something, because the message said that The Tin Pony on RP had closed. Now I'm just overwhelmed that people got that message on my RL shop for about 6 hours, what if they never come back? Carol Anne, was that the message you saw when you emailed me this morning? Great.....
Yes Anita, you and I were racing along together for most of this, but I think having a notice out there that both my shops were closed puts me ahead by a bit. Not a race I'm happy to be winning though. Hope you stay behind, you don't need any more problems.
Sigh..........................

Permalink Reply by CheriShops - Admin on November 9, 2011 at 1:27pm really really feel for you Dexter ):
I just posted on my facebook biz page and therefore auto-tweeted about your stores.
If a number of us do that it will maybe help get the word out that you are open for business as usual
Be sure to post some items or even just a "visit my shop" post on RL & RP fb pages too
ps. highjacking a thread means taking it off topic as we have done by talking Google analytics and reports ;)

Permalink Reply by CheriShops - Admin on November 9, 2011 at 1:28pm ps I did not mention your stores showing closed notices...just that they were great places to visit :)
I feel best PR is always positive so did not want to mention the negative of those notices!

Permalink Reply by Ruby Lane on November 9, 2011 at 1:50pm Hi Dexter,
I checked into your Email issue.
The email issue you encountered this morning is 'not' an issue related to the Update or any other RL problem. This is normal operating procedure for when a shops ISP bounces an email. There is only one bounced email. I see you use AOL as your Internet Service Provider. AOL is notorious for bouncing emails. I am surprised you haven't run across this problem in the past.
When an email we send to your registered shop email bounces back to us we automatically move the shop to preview to prevent potential customers from encountering the same issue. Just because one email was bounced back to us that doesn't mean your email account should be down. It means your ISP bounced that 'one' email back to us.
"Following the instructions and going to my home page I simply clicked on reopen my shop, and got the message that my shop is once again open. I did nothing whatsoever with my email address."
You wouldn't have to. At the next sign in, we provide a link. If you click the link as suggested you can view the entire content of the bounced email, which includes the reason your ISP sent it back to us. Perhaps you didn't notice the link. We also suggest to copy it and send it to your ISP. The copy of the email we show at next sign in also includes error message information about why the bounce occurred in the headers, like "554 5.1.0 Sender Denied" which can mean the ISP viewed our email as spam and refused to deliver it.
Once email leaves our servers and your ISP says, ‘OK,’ it is in their hands.
Our policy on non-working email addresses can be found in the Shop Handbook article, "Clear Communication:Tips For Efficient Email Use" on the Selling Successfully page.
Since we have no control over how your ISP might choose to manage mail sent to your email account, you would need to contact them to find out why an email we sent to your email address was not delivered. If you do not bring the problem to the attention of your ISP when it occurs, the problem may continue.
It would be a good idea for folks to read the information on this topic located on the Bulletin Board Forum: http://boards.rubylane.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&...
- especially the last section under Solutions
Although you clicked to clear your AOL email address for your Ruby Plaza shop (I see you use the same email address for both shops) as instructed, you must go to the shop's home page and reopen it.
If you tried to contact us while your email address was still set as 'bad' you would have received this message, 'Email Bounced". Until you clear it and reset the email address as we ask, then the system recognizes the email as 'bad' .
So, problem solved. :)
If anyone has questions let me know.
Carol
Permalink Reply by The Old Grey Mare on November 9, 2011 at 2:10pm Thanks Carol, I appreciate this. Nice to know (sort of) that it wasn't a change over problem. Not so nice to know that it's an AOL problem, although it hasn't happened in six and a half years, I do know there is a first time for everything. I did see the link. HOWEVER, when I clicked the link, I got another error message. I tried it in Chrome, IE and Firefox, on two different computers. Same thing, none of them would open the link. So, since it wouldn't open, I couldn't copy it. I did try to follow the steps, but I couldn't get past the link. Oh well, I'm back open for business.
I've gotten three more purchase orders today, so I'm feeling lots perkier. It's going to be a great holiday season everyone, I know it! Thank you everyone for your kindness, thank you Cheri, I saw your post on Twitter, you all are the best, I'm so happy I found this site. I'm trying to send out a Tweet or two every day, for everyone I chat with on TVV. I need to go to the Twitter discussion and find more of your Twitter names. Cheers! Dexter

and don't forget the tar and feathers....just kidding...it will be a shame if they do away with all of the reports. That is such a nice feature of RL's. I would dearly miss it! Why would they do that? Is it because they can't fix it?
Ruby Lane - Carol Augustine said:"ahhh, Ricky, humm, ah ah ah, well, ahh, its Ethel's fault...."
The reports are not working. I can't tell you for sure if they will be updated or not, but I will get an answer for you asap Since we are going to discontinue this reporting feature and use only Google analytics, well..........
Dexter, I see your ticket in the CS queue and have sent a note asking for an update.
There is a meeting in the town square at noon, bring rush torches and sawed off pitch forks. Only joking. LOL
Permalink Reply by Ruby Lane on November 9, 2011 at 2:27pm I will report to CS that you were not able to access the link in the email. We most likely will have to turn in a bug ticket to Tech to see if they can duplicate the problem. I researched the issue along with a Customer Support person and we didn't run into this problem. But, maybe it is an intermittent issue. I will let you know once I get an update. I don't think it will be today.I hope you got your RP shop opened again. Carol
