Ruby Lane has a shop - Modern Reproductions, Fakes and Fantasy: Illustrations and Characteristics for Help in Identifying Many Confusing New Items, which you will find useful for item identification purposes.
Item listings in this shop are intended to be viewed for educational purposes, only.
The shop is updated with new examples of modern reproductions, fakes, and fantasy items on a continuing basis.
The Modern Reproductions, Fakes, and Fantasies Shop is designed to serve as a handy tool for evaluating and identifying non-authentic goods. Known examples of novelty reproductions, fakes and fantasy pieces are illustrated for the purpose of research and education.
The Modern Reproductions, Fakes, and Fantasies Shop is fully searchable using the Ruby Lane Search tool which functions exactly as if you were searching within any individual Ruby Lane shop.
How This Shop Can be of Service
Modern fakes are often created with the specific intent of fooling the eye, and thus the buyer. They can be given the semblance of authenticity and age. The examples in this shop provide an opportunity for quick visual comparison and recognition.
How to Use the Examples in the Shop
It is very hard to be knowledgeable about many different areas of collecting. New collectors and dealers are especially vulnerable, since they are just beginning to learn the trade. It is not unusual to feel embarrassed, angry and sometimes discouraged, after discovering that a purchased item isn't authentic. But participation in a pursuit as varied as that of the collecting world almost ensures that some mistakes will sometimes be made.
It wouldn't be possible to fill the shop with examples of every known modern reproduction, fake or fantasy. But many of the listings in the shop include tips that can be useful for helping to identify other like items not shown.
A list of recommended Internet resources is posted in the shop's Favorite Links page.
Thanks so much. I am very glad to see as it is difficult to keep up with repros. Is there a way of submitting info that one might come across?
I am not sure let me check and I will get back to you.
I was wondering that myself, if shop owners could contribute. So much knowledge across the shops, so many different areas of expertise, it would be wonderful if shop owners could send information to RL, to be checked and then posted in the reproduction shop.
What a great idea this is. Thanks Ruby Lane
It depends on what you mean.
If you mean submitting links to informational sources like collector club pages or some like we already have in there, that we could add to the Favorite Links page in the shop, yes we can do that.
If you mean submitting information to us about places selling fakes, then no.
Your favorite answer: If you find a misrepresented item on Ruby Lane and you know of a site selling that same item, you can send in that kind of link when you flag the item, to illustrate why the item doesn't meet the listing guidelines. (FYI, there is a character limit in place on the form for submitting flags. If you run into that and think it is important to send in additional supporting information in regard to that item, for the flag, you can send that in via email to us. We keep all such information confidential.)
