Lots of us have both RL and Ruby Plaza shops. Now that Ruby Plaza is closing, it is obvious that most of us will transfer all our vintage items to RL. Hat's off to management for the classy way they are handling this!
The question I have, is what other on-line malls, besides EBay, are successful and seller-friendly for non-vintage, or "age unknown" items? IS there a viable alternative to EBay?

I don't know anything about it personally, but I do see people listing vintage/antique items there and it looks like they have categories for pretty much everything. I would be curious to hear more myself, since I do have a few things that won't fit on RL and I really hate ebay.
Permalink Reply by Jan Story on May 1, 2012 at 7:18pm There don't seem to be any that I know of - or I'd be selling there too! (Everybody seems to hate eBay... and yet we're still there because that's where the buyers are...) There seems to be a lot of vintage on Etsy but I also hear complaints of things not selling. I used to know a bunch of people who sold on eCrater but haven't heard much about it recently. Some people do well on Bonanza but it really doesn't get the traffic and it's more geared to newer items - you probably have to do a lot of promoting or something to get your items visible. Also, I'm not sure how good a reputation Bonanza has in the AVC marketplace. Artfire started out with an interesting concept but since they dropped their free-basic stores they're much less interesting.

I have a total of 7 stores there and most like will put my rp stuff there. I too was hoping for another venue. To me bonazal (new name) just doesn't cut it.
Oh why oh why rp do you have to go :(
Permalink Reply by 2Hearts Uptown @Ruby Lane on May 1, 2012 at 7:34pm Maybe new ideas will show up, but it has been clear for awhile that RP wasn't working out as we all hoped, so I've been "looking" for awhile and paying attention to the comments about other sites. I will probably dip my toe in the EBay waters sooner rather than later, for lack of another viable option. It is only Day 1 of The Announcement and I've already changed my hunt behavior - if it isn't "for sure" vintage, I'm not interested!

Permalink Reply by Out Of The Attic 2u on May 1, 2012 at 7:44pm For me I will never go back to ebay. To much stress there and too many fees. I don't mind paying but--------------------------

Permalink Reply by San Marcos Art Glass on May 1, 2012 at 10:58pm I had a thought whenever RL opened RP: why doesn't RL just create a contemporary lane (or lanes) on RL? Guidelines can be set up for things offered in the lane. I often feel the vintage restriction is difficult to work with. Sometimes I get something that is super nice, but not vintage. What do I do with it since I'm exclusive on RL? Take it to eBay <shudder>? Having quality contemporary things really wouldn't be going against what RL stands for, because contemporary artisan jewelry is offered.
I would love to see a contemporary lane... and it would accommodate people who are closing the RP stores.

Permalink Reply by CheriShops - Admin on May 2, 2012 at 7:16am I know of myself and some other shops who do feel RP was working out as we had hoped...I consistently got more traffic there than in my RL shop, and albeit lower ticket items, of which all were vintage, I got sales too.
ps eCrater is proving a viable option for me...only opened very recently but am making some sales already even tho I have very few items listed so far...and I can sell anything there, vintage, contemporary, and it is FREE

Permalink Reply by MiKollectibles on May 3, 2012 at 2:53pm There is another online selling venue called IOFFER. They also allow non vintage items to be sold. I have seen thier website come up in searches occasionally. I really dont know how well people do on it. We started out on a bunch of different venues and ended up liking RL and RP. Though we still very reluctantly use Ebay because of the low volume of sales on RP. I think we will spend a little time checking it out.
Permalink Reply by Joel Gilgoff on May 4, 2012 at 5:25pm I don't understand why you would list something on Ruby Plaza that qualifies for listing on Ruby Lane when Ruby Lane gets so much more traffic. I'm wondering why Ruby Lane just doesn't add another 2 lanes to its site to cover all of the listings on Ruby Plaza. They already allow "artisan jewelry."
Permalink Reply by Marni Bakst on May 4, 2012 at 6:05pm You are free to open a shop anywhere else and not jeopardize your exclusive status as long as your items do not qualify to be listed on Ruby Lane.

Permalink Reply by San Marcos Art Glass on May 4, 2012 at 6:25pm Marni, I didn't realize that. I thought that legally I was bound to only RP and online auctions for anything sold unless I dropped the exclusivity. Thanks for mentioning this. I will have to look into it.
