Where Vintage Never Gets Old...

We had been having discussions about SEO and effective marketing for our Ruby Lane shops.

Fine tuning our shops, reciprocal links, all the new attributes, etc.

One thing we did NOT cover thoroughly was the issue of watermarked images.  In the Google merchant area is information that leads me to believe that watermarked images and items with watermarked images do NOT show up in the Google shopping results.

What about Google organic search?

Does anyone have any further information on this question?

I've done a preliminary search for a few items that I know are watermarked in a shop on Ruby Lane, and those items are NOT showing up in my Google shopping results ... and they are not on the first page of my straight Google search.

Any info?

I think Carol confirmed on another thread recently that we should not have any "text" of any kind, which I assume includes watermarks" on our images as those are rejected by Google

Cheri:  I've just proven that information incorrect.

The items I was initially searching were new listings.

Going to older listings, I was able to quickly find (in both organic searching AND google shopping) an item with a watermarked photograph.

hmmmmmm  so those images weren't rejected, because there they were. (They are not my items and belong to another RL shop.)

ah interesting....I am trying to remember which thread that discussion on the photos was on?

So maybe Google doesn't consider watermarks as text ?

I don't know.

Their merchant pages say this:

"Your images may not contain promotional messages of any kind, including watermarks  or promotional text. You are not allowed to submit image links to logo images or other generic images."

from here: http://support.google.com/merchants/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=...

found this thread so far, where Carol commented, tho I know there was another one

seems maybe Google is not *yet* enforcing it...but likely will be....so maybe that is why you aren't seeing any new listings with watermarks, only older ones....maybe they have started enforcing it?

All of my pictures have and continue to have Holly Lane Antiques on them.  There is no way I can change or redo them for the almost 800 items I have listed.  They show up when I do a Google shopping search - both the older listings and the newer ones right alongside the same listing in my other internet store.  I can remember reading somewhere long ago that Google wouldn't do that either - list the same item in two places.

I am not sure I know what a Google organic search is - I just did a regular Google search.

I started labeling my pictures when I started finding them showing up in other peoples listings when I did searches.

Google organic search is aka "regular"....Google search bots index our items for that

Product search is reached via Google Shopping...this is the one that RL "feeds" to Google

I have tried to redo my photos one by one in my shop.
There was a time that I had RC Antiques in large print on all of my main photos, to brand myself..to make the name easily recognized, but, this is not the case anymore..things have changed.
If your photo has your shop name, large on the photo, it is considered an ad type photo.
I can remember about 2 years ago, when Diane of, " I Antique on Line", bulk emailed everyone that belonged to that site about this situation.
And then, this year, it became a reality...no shop name should be seen as a focal point of the photo.
Due to this change, I do not network my shop items that have RC Antiques in large print on the photo....thankfully, Pinterest gives several photo choices of the item for photos.
I still have Linda Caricofe / RC Antiques in small print on most of my listings because it is too time consuming to correct at this point, but no small print that has my name or my shop on my new listings.
I do know that a watermark over a photo is distracting.
If you are photographing an item you never want to see a blogger or book use, then the watermark is your choice.
However, we are not professional photographers or artists protecting our original creations ( that's who usually uses watermarks ) we are shop owners...so, one has to think to themselves, does it bother me if I see my item show up somewhere...if you enjoy Pinterest, that answers your question, you do not mind :-)
As far as the search engine. That's an excellent question.
I think it merits investigating, if you are determined to water mark your photos.
Best wishes, Linda Caricofe

I think the most "deciding" factor for me in not marking my photos is what Carol said about RL not using any marked photos for their promos......

Yep, that will do it.

And, no perks because of a name is not worth it..so, all of my new listings have no name at all.

I should have paid attention to Diane a couple of years ago, but, like a dummy, did not pay attention.

Now, photos of the items that have been in my shop for a while are not promoted because of the small print....thankfully as of last month, the photos of my latest listings have no print anywhere, zitto zap, not hidden, not small, nothing

Live and learn...and, by golly, do it with a smile :-)

I thought I remembered that as well Cheri, but if you look at the Monthly Finds that they sent out on February 4, you'll see three that have something written, by the shop owner, on the picture that RL used in the email.  So I'm confused about that.  Happy Monday everyone, hope it's a terrific week for all!

OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope it's not mine

If it is, then it's teeny tiny  print , and a photo I have not retaken yet.

Me bad, just can't redo all those photos, tried, but, hey...what can I say...I got to the point of almost closing the shop to erase everything and then, reopen, to start all over again, because of the gender / size / and color thing..and now the photos...but, decided no, I am over reacting...my shop will be fine.

And it is...but, slowly but surely, it is being updated with new photos.

I refuse to think my slowness is due to getting older, no way..somehow, I must be getting lazy, teeheeeee
