Where Vintage Never Gets Old...

Good morning all:)

A recent comment on the RL FB page had me thinking the other day:)  One seller commented on another's artisan jewelry about how nice it was to see the creative process at work (or something to that effect).

In my opinion, most people who are collectors of antique and/or vintage art, pottery and glass and are also collectors of  art, pottery and glass from new artists.  It would be amazing to see a site like Ruby Lane with their superior quality standards, also handle rising contemporary artists.  Obviously it would have to be juried and done the right way but is it possible?

I wasn't sure where to bring this up or who to bring it up to:)...but I thought that maybe Carol would have some input and was curious to know if this was something that would be or has ever been, considered.

I think this has been discussed before but Carol can answer more I am sure.

Pam, I know that this certainly true for me--I sell  midcentury Scandinavian/Italian art pottery and glass and am also very drawn to the amazing work of contemporary potters and glass makers.

Hi Pam,

Contemporary artists can list their items on Ruby Lane in the Fine Arts section. :) Here are the guidelines:

In addition to the Common Requirements, we require Fine Art items, i.e. those that begin with the word Fine Art in the category string, to meet these quality standards:

  • Fine Art items must be high quality original, or numbered limited edition pieces of signed or authenticated art such as paintings, sculptures, drawings, photos, or ceramics. No reproductions are allowed.
  • Minimum sale price for any Fine Art item is $100 USD.
  • Limited edition copies of an original artwork must be produced by the hand of the original artist or bear evidence of having been produced under their direction or with their approval. Generally, this will mean a limited edition copy of an original artwork is signed by the artist or bears their personal remarque.
  • Limited edition copies of an original artwork must be numbered.

  • Specifically excluded from being listedin Fine Art Lane are:
    • copies of another artist's work whether done by hand or machine.
    • items of decorative or applied arts.
    • print editions produced in excess of 1500 copies.
    • open edition prints .
    • commonly available, mass-produced prints.
  • Additional requirements for Fine Art: Antiques subcategory:
    • Fine Art: sub category Antique items must be high quality pieces that are 100 years old or older.
    • Anonymous antique works can be listed if their age can be reliably established even though not signed or authenticated.
    • If an artist's signature or remarque is present it must be pictured and be clearly readable in at least one photo.
    • Minimum sale price for any Fine Art: sub category Antique item is $100 USD.

Here is a few of the contemporary fine artists (shop name) whose work is listed on the site:

Uchizono Gallery - Rachel Uchizonoo, Lisa Williams Art Gallery - Lisa Williams, Gary Germer represents Brian Cook, Canadian Artist Julia Trops, Nouveau Art Gallery - Laurie Warner, Cascade Collection - Anton Pavlenko, Antiquarian Traders - Walter Furlon and many more.

Fantastic!!  Thanks, Carol!:)

One little thing to keep in mind for shop owners who want to list 'contemporary' artwork - make sure the item is signed by the artist or it is authenticated because if it shows up in a search somewhere, it is less than 20 years old and isn't signed or authenticated it is probably going to get flagged by someone. Occasionally folks try to 'slip' one in but trust me ---  the Artists notice. :)

Thanks for the info Carol:)  I'm not an artist myself but would love to promote that part of RL through FB, Pinterest, etc. and know a few artists who may be interested and like myself, didn't know.  I've always felt that the artistic community fuels creativity in those of us who aren't artists but creatively minded.

I'll go check out some of the artists that you listed now...thanks again:)
