I opened this thread at Etsy but it actually applies to any site. Basic question is: can I put words into a jpg photo to promote the listing with free shipping? I am thinking this is a safe way to do it without affecting data feeds for search engines. I don't want to be bouncing a listing
right?
Here is the photo I am using:
Comments anyone?

I don't know if there are sites online that will do it for you. Other people may know.

I'm finding no effects in my placements or showing in Google search. So I think I am good with this idea.

Personally I think the best way to do this is in your description. The only issues I have ever heard (second hand) is that titles and tags with this kind of wording will cause a problem.
Google and other search engines are looking for real content. If they suspect that you are key word stuffing they will drop you like a hot rock.
Everyone is fighting to be the top results in a search. And putting words like FREE as a title or tag clogs up the system. They are looking for content that is genuine.
Putting this on the image itself.... I really don't know if that will cause an issue or not. :) All I can suggest is to experiment.
Yes - that is an excellent way to put your 'free shipping' in front of the customer. The words are simply part of a jpg, thus simply picture, and are not read by Google search.
Great idea!

Permalink Reply by Another Time Antiques on July 2, 2011 at 10:32am Your exactly right: it's the allowed part. And I must stress: no, no, no - google does NOT WANT TEXT anywhere on the page that states free shipping. No tags. No title words. No description text. Nadda, nothing. They also do not like words that suggest a temporary situation: "This item is on sale".
OH CARP!#!*^(:
I was looking up the link page that explains more about Google data feeds/text allowed and I found the "sad" answer to my own question..........it's not allowed!!!!

Promotional or boilerplate text should not be included in your feeds or embedded in your images; all text should be a clear and direct description of the submitted product. In addition, do not submit image links to logo images or other generic images. Leave the image attribute blank if you do not have a specific image for an item.
OhBoy.......... I hope I haven't lead anyone into trouble. Guess I'll pull down those images..... :(

Ok. That being said - let me ask THIS:
"In addition, do not submit image links to logo images or other generic images."
Does this mean we shouldn't include a team logo as one of our photos? The Etsy Vintage Team has a logo that we include as the last photo of our listings when we have space. Is this a no-no or are they just looking at the first photo?

Another thought - how does Google differentiate between a deliberately embedded message and words that are part of an item (lettering on a collector's plate or on a tshirt, etc.)?
Hmmm...
