I have a question -

is cranberry glass the same thing as ruby glass?

if not - how do you tell the difference?

Thanks!

Marie

As far as I'm aware Cranberry glass has more of a purple tint to the red color. Let me see if I have any photos handy for some comparisons.

I love cranberry glass!

Not being "expert" in this area, I think that the only difference in ruby vs cranberry glass is the amount of gold chloride added?

The Glass Encyclopedia has some basic info

So here we have 4 examples of red glass.

The first piece is very much Ruby Glass. You can still see some of the amber colour coming through. Ruby glass is made from yellowish/amber glass which is then reheated (restruck) and it's this additional head that causes it to turn Ruby.

This is how we get Amberina glass too, they simply only put a portion of the glass back in the fire and hence only colour a portion of the piece ruby and leave the rest a yellowish amber.

The second piece is a piece of Murano glass, I would call this Cranberry. The color is more transluscent than the ruby glass and it has a slightly purple tone to the red.

The same goes for the third piece. I believe this is a piece of Pilgrim cranberry glass if memory serves correctly. Again you can see the pinkish/purply color that the red has rather than the solid ruby color of the last piece.

The fourth piece is a piece of Rainbow glass. You can't see it in this photo but this piece also has a slight amber ring about the top from the restriking process.

Hopefully that gives a fairly clear example of the difference in color tones :) Let me know if you have any other questions.

Oh perfect!

Thanks Cheryl :)

I was just about to go hunt down that information myself :) yay Teamwork!

Ooh I just found this old photo lurking in my photobucket.

Eye Candy moment!

Thanks! Appreciated!
This is a wonderful conversation...I'm going to learn something.  I bought a beautiful pitcher over the past weekend and I'd love to share it here and ask questions..I hope that is OK..

look forward to seeing the pitcher Carolyn :)

all photos of our items are a-ok in  the groups...just not links to them "for sale" ;-)

Thank you.. The vase is about 9 3/8 inches tall.  Rough pontil...any information would be very much appreciated.

oh that is lovely!

The pattern would be a diamond quilted, and the rim sure looks Fentonesque, but I don't think I have ever seen Fenton with that daisy style base and elevated pontil....maybe Victorian British?  Not my area of expertise but oh so gorgeous!!

Just to stir the pot a very small bit, how does pigeon blood glass fit into this conversation of red glass?  Usually had seen term applied to  victorian and earlier red glass that had a deep red color  but usually was not perfectly uniform. Could be completely off, of course, but would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.  thanks,  jacque
