Where Vintage Never Gets Old...

When I was growing up in the 60's my neighbors had a huge yard full of all kinds of weird stuff that would now be huge collectors items.

The one I remember the most was a neighbor who bought sea shells that were all different colors and lined her flower bed with them....

And of course the bright red Glass Gazing Ball right in the middle of it all...

What kind of Kitsch is on YOUR Lawn.... ????

It's modern kitsch, but we have a black, plastic gargoyle and a resin fairy overseeing our garden. :)

The only real garden ornament I have is a small concrete sitting basset hound with very droopy eyes and long, long ears which sits next to my front door:) We won it at auction and as I have three bassets, I obviously could not live another day with out it!;) My neighbor is Romanian and loves to garden from morning to night and is fascinated with all garden ornaments, the cheaper the better--frogs, angels, hedgehogs, owls, you name it she's got them all tucked in amongst her many gardens. She adores American kitsch, bless her heart. Her husband even has (gasp!) a pink flamingo next to the tree. Somehow, and I don't quite know how, it "fits" at her house;) Her husband loves to vacation in Maine and his dogwood tree is hung with lots of old brightly painted wooden lobster pot buoys that looks pretty cool:)

My garden is also full of Frogs! Small frogs, Large frogs, medium sized. Mostly ceramic. Up on my porch and on the steps too. Plants in frog planters. My favorite is a 2 foot tall frog "thinker" statue.

A few dragonflies on the wire stakes of course.... My husband bought that "face" you can put on a tree, but I've managed to bury it somewhere. Wind-chimes & bird-feeders hanging from the porch... I've managed to avoid one of those little whirly shiny things so far, but I know hubby isn't going to resist much longer.

What would you call the deer skull my son has on the front porch?

In our town, we don't call it Kitsch - we call it "yard art"!! (That's to get around the neighborhood association rules - hehehe)
Real deer are better. That way, if any of your plants kick the bucket, you can blame the deer. And you don't have to mow around them!

We just moved but honey had made me a white church with steeple to cover our well head where we were before. Soon as he is able with all the other chores I am wanting him to make me another one.
I am always asking people for lawn kitsch as gifts and noone takes me seriously.
I love it. I have real deer in my yard but want some fake ones. foofoogal. Sandy
One cool place to view kitschy lawn stuff is in older trailer courts. Take your camera, and be prepared to be asked what you're doing. I've always told people that I find their taste extraordinary and couldn't wait to have pictures to share. - and yes, concrete frogs peeking out from behind anything constitute Kitsch of the highest order.
I don't really get to decorate my lawn, that's my dad's domain. He's into suburban farming and doesnt leave my any space with all the guavas, pumpkins, plaintains and whatnot.

I do remember when I was little, we had a neighbor that would put egg shells on the tips of the plants. I think they were aloe or something else spiky like that. My parents would make fun of it but I remember I used to love it. She also had pink flamingos, pinwheels and a horse riding toy thing that she had half buried in the ground. She had the best yard ever.

Oh, I just found this--sorry to be so late.  My yard is littered with gnomes, but one day they had a confab.  They didn't know I was lurking but I managed to get a picture.

Frogs, love frogs (not real ones) so I have frogs in our yard. Love to see unusual stuff in a yard.
