Where Vintage Never Gets Old...

My German teacher, back in the 60s in highschool, defined Kitsch as "artistic junk," and now having been an antiques dealer for years, of everything from 1800s through Fab 50s and 60s, I think it's the best definition I have ever heard, and still define it that way. Top on her list of "Kitsch" ? Hummels. I couldn't agree more!

So, here's a pic of the 1979 apartment in Denver - one thing I loved back then was collecting hand painted copies of old Master paintings...the good, the bad and the ugly. Just above my head is the bottom half of a copy of The Pont Neuf, Paris by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. This apartment on 15th street embodied my definition of Kitsch - I still have the huge highback crewel work armchair, a Colonial Williamsburg marked piece that I bought back then for 35.00 bucks.

To me, kitsch is quirky, funny, and fabulous, with a pinch of venom. I have a greeting card website, tudify.com, where I have some nasty, funny cards (nasty mean, not nasty gross or naked) :)

One of my favs is the Old Maid card. It says on the front, "Everyone is getting married and having babies but you?"

The inside says. "If you weren't such a bitch, you wouldn't be single."

tee hee!

To me, kitsch is creatively offbeat. It's offbeatness is what gives it value, in my mind.
I love to mingle kitsch throughout my household, amdist the photos of the kids, antique transferware, pieces of art, etc. It lightens the mood, keeps me from taking life so seriously and makes visitors raise their eyebrows.
PS - That's some serious hair in the apartment photo! It kind of has its' own kitsch going!
I love it!

Kitsch is bright, colorful, quirky, bold and odd to me. I love the way it just fits in wherever you put it it blends in with eclectic, which is me all over lol
