The Vintage Village

Where Vintage Never Gets Old...

I love each March when I get my Burpee's, Spring Hill Nursery, and Gurneys catalogs in the mail.

I curl up on the couch and dog ear all the pages and circle all the new things I want and then realize I'd need three yards to fit it all...

One of the ones I get is really unique and is from Planet Natural which is all about organic and non-toxic ways to deal with plant and yard care.

If you have links to any others, post them here.

A friend of mine gave me a catalog from Territorial Seed Company: http://www.territorialseed.com.

I had to jump in here, and say that I always used Wayside gardens, however I returned the gift certificate my daughter gave me for Mother's Day, because they did not send it to me in time, and had a big rose sale, which they would not let me buy from since I had to call them to get the gift certificate, instead of getting it in my email, as I should have...and by the time I called to see what happened the sale was over...I do have an absolutely devine new catalogue Klehm's Song Sparrow...I have not ordered anything yet, but am planning to....www.songsparrow.com is the email address... I would like to suggest some rose that I think are beautiful and pretty reliable in zone 5/6...one of them is Betty Prior, and nice single rose....Jeanne La Joie...not sure if I spelled it cottectly, but it is a miniature pink rose, but the bush is a rambler and looks nice on a fence...and Altissimo...my very favorite...a big blood red single rose with yellow stamens....this is the second year and it is blooming like crazy.... My peonies are beautiful this year also, in spite of the fact that I have moved so many of them...
I did the tomato ring, and liked the idea so much I did a smaller one and tried planting cucumbers around the outside, some of which I will transplant to where my peas are now, after they are picked and gone...and hopefully they can use the wire to climb on that the peas are using now..Hopefully!!!! I really like the catalog from http://www.westcoastseeds.com/ . Lots of organic and open pollenated varieties. They have a really useful planting calender which I refer to again and again. I'm not sure if they ship all their product to the USA though... I'm in Canada. Lynn
Having a HUGE garden space was and will always be a prerequisite of mine. I have herbs, vegetables, fruits, shade, sun, roses, and cutting gardens. We are currently in the 1st year of our landscaping project and last year we added 5 new production beds. We produced about 400lbs of food in the first year! So we are all anxiously awaiting the new season.
We strive to be as organic and green as we can possible be. Living in an area where that is somewhat difficult to do, we have had to come up with a lot of our own earth friendly supplies and methods. We built a chicken coop and rescued some poor abused chickens three years ago, only to find that they are the easiest pets we have ever had. We feed them strictly an organic diet and they in turn provide us with hours of entertainment, healthy organic eggs, and compost materials. It is a win win for all. We also picked up 5 rain barrels last year...I am excited to see how well they do this upcoming season.

As far as seeds go, I try to buy and use only heirloom seeds...most of the older plants that have survived for many years are free of the GMO's that can be found in the hybrids today. The best source I have found for the specialty heirloom seeds is Baker Creek. You can request their catalogue for free...just visit http://www.rareseeds.com
They also offer lots of info on seed drying and planting seasons.

I am so excited to see this group...now I can get my vintage info, and garden info at the same place. Two of my true loves!
dirt....gotta dig in the dirt...........!
This year we used the Territorial Seed catalog http://www.territorialseed.com/?r=JWGOOGB&gclid=CMm11brV76ACFVx... to order our three heirloom tomatoes for the garden--we got the seeds about three weeks ago and they are all popping up like crazy! We planted Brandywine, Costoluto Genovese and an Italian striped Roma ($3.15/pack, yikes!). We have decided to go with heirlooms from now on. They even threw in a free packet of carrots! This year we are growing the tomatoes, basil (in between the tomato plants), mint, chives, carrots, sugar snaps and I am anxious to try asparagus, especially since it's a perennial. Philip built a large cold frame and we will be hardening off the tomato plants in a bit. I am going to get some heirloom roses next. Spring has indeed sprung and I am well and truly glad of it!

I just found this older thread about seed catalogs   I just got my new Burpee's catalog....I am a wintertime armchair gardener too!  I have always loved the strange and off the wall stuff you sometimes find in the Gurney's catalogs.  Hmm...time to go through my inventory and pull out the planters and vintage seed catalogs and flower frogs too.  Hopefully spring won't be so shy this year and will arrive on time.  Happy 2012 to all you gardeners.

I love White Flower Farm too!
