Where Vintage Never Gets Old...

When hubby and I came home from errands today, a huge box turtle was sitting at the edge of the driveway. If we hadn't seen him, we would have surely run over him. He is very large, about the size of a dinner plate. He now resides in my garden, but I expect he will try to find his way home as box turtles have a built in instinct to return to the area where they were born. Amazing, isn't it? I think he's at least in his teens if not older.

Love turtles!
They're not slippery or sneaky!

What a lovely creature!! My friend recently had a similar experience with a huge turtle --she believed it was a female. It just made its way sloooowly up her walk to her front door, looked her in the eye, seemed to "sigh" and then collapsed from exhaustion. She knew she had to take it across a very busy 4 lane highway (route 1) to the pond on the other side of the road, where she is pretty sure the turtle had her babies. She drove it across to the pond and said the turtle just looked at her as if to say "thank you":)

How fun, I remember where I grew up we had snapping turtles. Not as pets tho. :)
He/She is beautiful!
How lovely all I get are mice.....
thats so cool!!! I hope you took good care of the little guy while you had him ~ do you still have hm hanging around or did he venture off?
Yes, we took good care of him. We didn't run over him in the driveway! LOL
I haven't been out in the garden to see if he's hanging around or if he wandered off. We have almost an acre with 2/3 of it in the back, so he has plenty of room to move around. I read up on box turtles and apparently they have an instinct to go back to where they were born, so he's probably trying to get home.
I keep calling him "he". I never saw a box turtle so big. Truly it was an inspirational feeling to hold one of God's elusive creations in my hands.
I took my chimney stack down and am excited to use the old bricks (90 years old!) and the materials in my garden.
