Where Vintage Never Gets Old...

I am in a dilemma about this woman’s dress. For the life of me I am undecided of its age. I do know that the dress is vintage and possibly older than 25 years because of the label. The name is Henry Rosenfeld New York Original.

Since I am new to this I thought you Fashionistas would give me some much needed information. I have gone to the Vintage Fashion Guild with no response and have looked a gazillion websites. So here is my lovely dress!

Hoping to hear some good news!!!

I would say it's from the 50's, but that is just a guess on my part.  Very nice dress
1950s.
Aha!  I entered the work force in the late 1950's and I recall wearing a pink dress styled like this one, except it was belted at the waist.  It was called a "Shirt Waiste Dress".   It had the 3/4 length sleeves, belted waist and either a pleated or gathered skirt.  I think you would be safe to say the CA is 1950-1960 because it was a very popular style and the style lasted for at least a decade.

Hi There,

I believe it is a mid-late 1940"s dress and  if my memory is having an "on" day Henry Rosenfeld was sold in department stores and was a " good' dress then and I think it's a great dress now.   This is my first impression, it could be later, into the 50's.  Hope another vintagista can be more definite!

Cheers,

Mary Ann

btw, since i'm a member of the VFG, i was concerned to read that you hadn't received any responses when you asked for dating help there...after a quick search, i found your question/post (from this past June), and it actually was answered after only about 5 minutes of being posted.  She, too, suggested 1950s, mid 50s, actually.   :)

I did some research after sending you a message and I believe you will find the  answer at this link:

This website states that the shirt waist dress actually appeared on the scene as early as 1947,  Let me know what you think after reading it.

Thank you for all your replies. I appreciate everyone of them.

Funny about VFG I never recieved a response about an answer to my question. I will go and check it out. I was and still am having problems with the comp so it could have been on my end.

I concur with the mid 50's to early 60's era. I actually sold a similar Rosenfeld a few years ago but I thought it was a department store? but anyhow "Mad Men" era has been selling my hair accessories after the keyword was suggested by a buyer! anybody else using this as a keyword in titles?
No but I will add it when I decide when to list it!!! Thanks for the tidbit :)
I have a tip, if I may.  One way I use to determine the age of a dress, style name, sizes, etc. is to look at vintage sewing patterns. I always err on the side of caution with respect to the measurements for a size, but usually they are within the range. There are many, many websites selling vintage patterns, so you have a huge resource to tap into. Carol - the shop owner.

Hi Carol,

I have oodles of patterns which I sell elsewhere. Most of my patterns are from the 70's and 80's with a few from the 50's. I also have tons of books that have vintage fashions in them and I do boocoo searches on the net! I just wanted a quick picker-upper to save me some time since I work full time now!

But I do agree that looking at old sewing patterns are a good way to go. As always I do appreciate your help all the time, cause you is good. :0)

Barbara

Hey Barbara, If you find that 'quick picker-upper' let me know, I could use it!!! bah lolololol

Obviously, I am sleep deprived.
