Lucite

I'm having a conversation with a guy on Flickr about what kind of material a particular clock case is made out of.  He asserts that "Lucite" is clear, but from what I know, it's not always clear but, at least in the case of vintage Lucite jewelry, also comes in any opaque color you can think of. My question to you vintage jewelry folks is - even in the case of colored Lucite, is it always at least somewhat translucent, rather than completely opaque?  Thanks in advance - I'd hate to get it wrong…See More

Another modern mystery

I really have to stop looking at modern glass - it keeps following me home!I just couldn't resist this pair of smoked glass candleholders - they appear to be molded, as they have no pontil mark on the bottoms, but the edge is ground, so some care has been taken with them.  They're a sort of half-egg shape, and the opening for the candle runs through to the bottom.  Unmarked in any way - probably had an applied label at some point. Any guesses?  I've been looking at Viking and at various…See More

Hazel Atlas Criss-Cross mixing bowls!

Posted on March 23, 2010 at 12:00am 8 Comments

I saw these on Saturday and didn't buy them, because I couldn't believe they were the Real Deal. After doing a bit of research I went back today and bought them (pics are just of the larger bowl - 9.5" - there's also a smaller one, 8.5".) Apparently they are the genuine article, and other than a couple of mfg. flaws they're in beautiful…

I tend to get my best ideas in the car. Of course, that sometimes means that while I'm Thinking Important Thoughts I miss my exit, or forget to pick up dog food on the way home, but sometimes the payoff is worth the minor inconveniences.

A couple of days ago I was in the midst of running around to a couple of my favorite treasure hunting spots, and was carrying on a conversation with Myself about my on-going frustration over vintage sellers who don't seem to know what they're…

A couple of weeks ago - right after Christmas - I cut my lunch short and stopped by the thrift store that's closest to my house, because I needed a new (vintage) mug for the office (don't ask what happened to the old one. 'Twasn't pretty.) Anyway, I got caught up (of course) and a two-minute dash turned into a 15-minute wander, and before I knew it, I really needed to get out of there and get back to work. As I grabbed my bag and headed out the door, I spotted a GORGEOUS bar set on the shelves… Continue

Good intentions pave the road to... treasure!

Posted on December 11, 2009 at 10:00am 1 Comment

Last weekend, I once again cleared my car of the various finds that had accumulated in there (having just emptied the back seat of boxes, etc., the previous weekend so my large dog could ride back there on the way to see my family) and set off for another auction. This is one that I nearly skipped in the online listing - the title highlighted a couple of large ticket items that held no interest for me, and it was only when I clicked on it and started skimming thru the descriptions that I… Continue

Wait, I DO have a book for you that maybe you can Interlibrary loan.

The Embroidery of Madeira by Carolyn Walker and Kathy Holman, 1987

"The embroidery of Madeira is brought to you in stunning full-color photographs and step-by-step instructions you can apply to your creations."

While you probably do not want to work these yourself, you can learn to recognize them when you see them, and some of the stitches are unique to Madeira. I look at this book all the time.

I don't imagine that you want to actually work these stitches, but they are in some cases unique to Madeira, and you can start to learn to recognize them. I look at this book often. Maybe you could interlibrary loan it.
